12 Upcoming New HBO Series To Be Excited About

The Nevers is a new TV project from the mind of Joss Whedon. For many viewers, that’s all we need to know. Whedon’s TV CV has generated an enormous amount of good will. His is an incredibly distinctive style, often imitated but never bettered, and merely hearing that he’s making a return to the small screen is enough to entice the hardcore fans.

If you’re not a Whedon disciple, though, there’s still plenty to be excited about. The Nevers is set in 19th century London, focusing on a group of women with unusual powers. If you’re a Buffy devotee, then that’s likely more than enough to seal the deal. But even if you’ve never trifled with the Sunnydale massive, know that Whedon writes great roles for strong women in genre fiction, and has a great track record with creating iconic badass female characters.

Whedon tends to dish out roles to his favourite actors project after project, so expect some familiar faces. Excitingly, though, Nick Frost is in the main cast here as a big name in the criminal underworld. The combination of Frost’s comedy chops and Whedon’s knack for snappy dialogue could be a scorcher.

What’s more, it’ll be great to see Joss Whedon take his boundless imagination to a network like HBO. While sex, swearing, and violence aren’t everything, The Nevers might just be Whedon unbound, free to exercise the wildest of his whims. His stock has skyrocketed since getting involved with the big screen superhero boom, but a return to his TV roots could provide us with another classic series.
