11. Oberth-class
Key Appearances: The Pegasus, The Naked Now Starfleet's most purely scientific vessel, the Oberth-class was used extensively in exploring astronomical phenomena as well as experimentation with advanced weapon, propulsion, and sensor systems. The Oberth-class was unique for having its secondary hull almost completely separated from the rest of the ship and the vessel as a whole is slightly more angular than others in Starfleet. The Oberth contained minimal weaponry and combat defenses but it did have one of the most advanced shield systems in Starfleet as one of its design requirements was to withstand natural phenomena, such as radiation, in excess of what other starships could. The Oberth-class was featured in several episodes and also appeared in multiple of the Star Trek films.
