13 Best TV Moments Of 2016 (So Far)

12. Mikey's Coming Out - Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's second season was every bit as weird, joyous, and funny as the first, along with adding some more serious elements.

Although there were some incredible jokes in this season, such as the line linking Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne to Mad Men's Don Draper (both characters are played by Jon Hamm) or "Is Cate Blanchett good or is she just tall?" there were a couple of moments that stand-out as the best. I considered putting in Kimmy's emotional reunion with her mother here, because it was funny and poignant and Lisa Kudrow was perfect casting for the role. But then, it's impossible to overlook the scene where Titus has dinner with Mikey's family.

Billed as the occasion when a nervous Mikey comes out to his Italian-American family, it wonderfully flips that moment: Mikey's family, and particularly his father, are setup as the sort of traditional stereotypes who wouldn't accept their son being anything other than straight. Instead, they're completely fine with it, and really happy for Mikey, and it's left to Titus to complain that there was no drama and simply acceptance. It's a great subversion of what you'd expect, and some solid commentary from the show (coming out should not have to be this big, family-altering event).

What truly elevates this scene, however, is Mikey's grandmother. She's very old, and everything you'd expect from the Italian grandmother stereotype, except, well... she's a muppet. That she's a muppet doesn't change anything, with the family still showing her the utmost respect (and she's also happy for Mikey), and that just makes it more hilarious, especially since it looks pretty much spot-on too. It's a completely ridiculous moment, wrapped up in a more serious one, but somehow totally works.
