10. Frank Gets Shot - House Of Cards
After a rather lacklustre third season, House of Cards returned to form this year. Sure, it's probably eschewed any notion of it being a serious political drama, but leaning into its weirder side made for an entertaining Season 4.
While much of the drama was once again centred on the relationship between Frank and Claire, along with his battle to hold on to the Presidency he murdered his way into, and the battle with their new rivals, the Conways, the centrepiece of the season was a big, shocking moment; the shot heard around the world, with an assassination attempt on Frank Underwood's life.
Many assassinations have been attempted on various Presidents, with some tragic success, so it only seems right that a show with a murderous POTUS would tackle such a plotline, but it still felt momentous when it happened.
His shooting helped propel things forward, throwing the show down a totally different path, where we delve deep into Frank's psyche, see the first signs of vulnerability to him, highlight the violent working of his inner-mind and how he can't escape the past, and just how broken his and Claire's relationship is, but how much they need to keep it together. It also allowed Claire to come more into the fore, which would payoff surprisingly in the final scene of the season, and further develop some of the supporting players.
Season 4 could've continued the stagnation of Season 3, but the assassination attempt - and death of poor Meechum - gave it a much-needed shot in the arm. Or chest.
