13 Best TV Moments Of 2016 (So Far)
7. Chuck's Collapse - Better Call Saul
Although the first season of Better Call Saul was great, Season 2 took it to another level. In terms of quality it's not all that far behind its parent show, although this is a very different beast to Breaking Bad.
It's much slower, and driven by its characters rather than its plot. Incredibly detail-orientated and beautifully shot, there's not much else like it on TV at the moment. Although Saul isn't a show that's full of obviously huge or awesome moments, preferring a quieter sort of spectacle, there were a few standouts this year: Jimmy's advert was great to see, and that final twist of the knife from Chuck was brutal.
The best, however, was Chuck's collapse. Sensing that Jimmy has pulled some of his usual trickery, he heads to a copy shop and demands to know whether his brother was in there making copies. It manages to wring a lot of drama and tension out of the scene, cutting between an anxious Jimmy watching from the shadows, and an increasingly frantic and angry Chuck wanting to know the truth, and refusing to leave until he hears the right answer. Being outside and around so much technology, his electromagnetic hypersensitivity really starts to take its toll. The scene takes its time building to this, and does some great work with sound and slo-mo to show the buzzy, fuzzy effects on Chuck, before his eventual fall with an almighty thwack of his head on the way down, while Jimmy looks on unsure of what to do.
The twisted relationship between Jimmy and Chuck is at the heart of the show, the pair undermining each other and Chuck never believing in his brother, while Jimmy can't help but care for him, and this was some major payoff of that.
