4. Tom Baker In Lionel Nimrod's Inexplicable World

Tom Baker has clearly been a huge influence on a generation of comedians, appearing alongside Reeves & Mortimer in Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased), Matt Lucas and David Walliams in Little Britain and Charlie Higson and Rhys Thomas in Swiss Toni. Another show that's less well-remembered is Stewart Lee and Richard Herring's Radio 4 show Lionel Nimrod's Inexplicable World.

Baker plays the titular Lionel Nimrod, a suitably fruity parody of Mr. Spock himself Leonard Nimoy. Each episode would tackle inexplicable, occasionally cryptozoological phenomena across the sea, the human body, creation and much more. It ran for two series, and Tom would introduce and close each episode with these wonderful monologues with lines like "...come with me now, into the swirling mists of human inadequacy" or "...so the stinking black curtain we call time, is drawn aside."

Baker lends these over-the-top monologues a suitable degree of gravitas, making them utterly hilarious. Lionel Nimrod's Inexplicable World is a sharper, funnier fore-runner to Little Britain, and features a supporting cast of the likes of Armando Iannucci and Rebecca Front. It's worth seeking out for anyone with a keen interest in British comedy.
