8. Michael Sheen in The Doctors Wife
Someone once mentioned that Michael Sheen was one of the best character actors in the world, and for a while I never really understood why. It was only after realising just how much hes been in that I really appreciated the genius. To go from a cheery yet mocking David Frost to the white rabbit in Alice in Wonderland and still maintain all that dignity has to be admired, and his nightmarish take on the character of House in The Doctors Wife is by far one of the many things that made this episode great. He has everything, Neil Gaimans stylized writing prowess, a malevolent, sadistic mind, and, best of all, Michael Sheens voice. But when Amy and Rory were running through the TARDIS corridors as House began to play with their minds, that was when the episode became truly terrifying, suggesting that even in the TARDIS, youre not safe from this guy and his shockingly cruel games. (The Hate Amy moment is probably the one that sticks in peoples minds the most in terms of flat out monstrosity.) And again, I had no idea that was Michael Sheen. I swear to God, I thought that was Benedict Cumberbatch. In all cases, whether hes playing Tony Blair or a Neil Gaiman monster, you dont see Michael Sheen playing a character, you see the character, perfectly formed. Hes like Gary Oldman, in that whenever you see his name in the credits you instantly go, That was Michael Sheen?
