13 Reasons Why Season 3: Ranking Every Character From Worst To Best

1. Clay Jensen

The protagonist of the series, Clay Jensen was, like always, at the heart of the mystery as he attempted to uncover all there was to know about Bryce’s murder. However, this time, he was a lot closer to the mystery than he wanted to be, as he was named a suspect in the murder investigation.

Being at the centre of everything, Clay functioned similarly to how he did in previous seasons, though this time the added stakes enhanced his character journey.

With a strong goal and all-round improved characterisation, he felt a lot more like a real person this season as, through his newfound friendship with Tyler and his evolving friendship with Jessica, he finally figured out that it is up to abuse survivors to share their story whenever they wish to – and not him. That, in itself, indicated just how much he had learned.

In addition, his relationship with Ani proved to be one the things that felt the most natural about the new character’s introduction and it also provided us with a rare opportunity to see him crack a smile.

Thanks to Dylan Minnette’s outstanding performances, Clay has always been a remotely compelling lead, but this year, the broody teenager felt a lot more realistic and, as a result, finally became the show’s most interesting character.
