13 Reasons Why Season 4: Ranking Every Character From Worst To Best
2. Clay Jensen
Having taken on the stress and concerns of every single one of his friends, the guilt of their mistakes and the grief of their losses - not-to-mention his own feelings of guilt, grief and self-loathing as well - it was only a matter of time until Clay Jensen broke. The final season was that moment.
This season's mysterious and unreliable narrator, we finally got to hear the story from Clay's perspective and there was something oddly fascinating about his outlook on life and how it was ultimately preventing him from moving on. Was his miserable, nihilistic view exhausting at times? Absolutely, but given all that he has been through, it's fair to say he gets something of a free pass.
Clay has never been the perfect hero that so many at Liberty High mock him for trying to be, and that's one of the reasons he works so well as a protagonist. He's deeply flawed and doesn't always see that, but the years of pent-up frustration and anger overtook him this season, pushing him over the edge and testing his mental health in a way it had never been tested before.
Yes, his outlook was a little too bleak for a show that already personifies the word, and that did take some of the enjoyment factor (if that's even the right term?) out of the final season. But, regardless of how it made you feel, it certainly made for a compelling watch, and it allowed Dylan Minnette to turn in the performance of his career.
