The second season of 13 Reasons Why is unquestionably the show's weakest season, and one of the many reasons for that was Clay's interactions with the ghost of Hannah Baker.

While it sure had its moments, it became pretty clear that she was little more than an expositional plot device - and that became a problem, as she was basically just a sounding board for Clay. And, unfortunately, the writers decided to bring the trope back for Season 4 - this time, using the ghosts of Bryce and Monty.

While it does get away with it a little better this time given all that is going on in Clay's head, the fact that Jessica also starts having full-on conversations with the ghost of Bryce undermines that - making it clear that the ghosts are, once again, simply there as a plot device.
