13 Reasons Why Season 4 Review: 7 Ups & 6 Downs

5. Time Jumps

13 Reasons Why Season 4 Justin Clay Ani Jessica
Netflix

While the format of this season - in which Clay retrospectively recalls the events through a conversation with his therapist - actually works in its favour, one thing this writer found particularly irksome was the multiple time jumps.

Every time the tension began to mount as the narrative built towards a crescendo, something huge would happen and then CUT! And the scene would be over and suddenly, we're 10 days or two weeks later.

While this may have been necessary for the progression of Clay's arc, it resulted in the show unnecessarily skipping over important character moments like the aftermath of major incident or how one person makes another see that they're good for each other.

Character moments like these are important but the time-jumps ultimately give the story a pass it doesn't need.
