It is sad to discover that in 2015, people are still homophobic. However, in the 1960s, when Asylum was set, homosexuality was considered both a sin against God and the law; it was illegal and these tendencies didn't go unpunished. Lana Winters is in love with another woman and because of her sexuality, she has to undergo treatment to cure her 'lesbianism' at Briarcliff. She is forced to watch and fondle a fellow male inmate while she herself masturbates. The scene is excruciating to watch as she cries and throws up when she is made to touch him. Sister Jude and Dr Thredson ignore her pleas about her not being able to change her sexuality, as she declares that it is innate, something that she was born with. Viewers can't help but feel sorry for her and their treatment of her is just as sickening as what she has to endure. Of course, love isn't true love unless it's between a man and a woman, right?
