3. Nicholas Courtney
Arguably the most popular character in the entire show after the Doctor himself, Nicholas Courtney was drafted in at the eleventh hour to play Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart in The Web of Fear with Patrick Troughton. He was lucky enough to return when the producers decided on the UNIT format. Little would Courtney know that he'd playing the part of the Brigadier for the next four decades, culminating in a guest stint in The Sarah Jane Adventures. Alas, the Moff has now resurrected his desiccated corpse as a Cyberman. Yuck. Courtney actually made his Who debut with William Hartnell in The Daleks' Masterplan where he plays Space Agent Bret Vyon who is killed by his own sister Sara (Jean Marsh, mentioned earlier). This means Courtney starred with all the classic Doctors - in the show proper with 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7, with 6 in the Children in Need farrago Dimensions in Time and with 8 on audio for Big Finish in Minuet in Hell. Still greatly missed.
