2. Big Mouth - The Shame Wizard Chases Andrew

BoJack Horseman Don't Stop Dancing
Netflix

The shame wizard was a huge part of Big Mouth Season 2, wonderfully played by David Thewlis. In truth, there were a few moments of his that could’ve qualified here; befriending Coach Steve, haunting Missy or Jessi, his song at the sleepover... but his first appearance when he chases Andrew home remains his best.

For the animation alone, it deserves the crown. As the shadows crawl along the road and claw at Andrew, the atmosphere is eerily creepy and steeped in haunting darkness. While the sleepover episode perfectly encapsulates the difficulties of puberty with everyone moving at different paces, his first appearance is a searing hot knife in the chest of anyone who remembers being caught doing something they shouldn’t have while growing up.

Andrew has always been a likeable character; nerdishly charming despite some of the rather creepy things he does. And the creepiest by far is sniffing the crotch of his best friend’s sister’s bathing suit while touching himself in their bathroom.

He’s caught (by the sister, no less) and feels deeply ashamed. This brings out the shame wizard, and the moment is made all the more powerful because we all know he deserves it.
