15 Best Animated TV Moments Of 2018
1. BoJack Horseman - Opening The Casket
An episode long monologue. The writers of BoJack Horseman have always been known to take risks, most notably in Season 3’s almost entirely dialogue free Fish Out Of Water. Having proclaimed TV to be a ‘visual medium’ in Season 5’s episode 6, they followed with an episode consisting of just BoJack at the lectern, eulogising his late mother Bea.
The episode never runs out of steam, despite the tangents BoJack goes off on. Becker, coffee cups left by production crew, his father’s death in a duel and the his mother’s last words ‘I see you’ all get discussed in depth as BoJack goes on without a breath. ‘I see you’ in particular gets devastating at times as BoJack’s brain unfolds it.
The best moment comes at the end when BoJack finally opens the casket. Although we don’t see it, BoJack’s reaction tells us he’s clearly at the wrong funeral, and his outpouring has been to a completely unrelated family of lizards.
While this is a comedic ending to the episode, it’s also a fantastic metaphor for BoJack’s relationship with his mother. Even at her funeral, BoJack and his mother never really communicated.
