15 Best Horror TV Series

12. Marianne

Bates Motel Freddie Highmore
Netflix

Netflix’s Marianne is horror for the James Wan era. Its story often feels secondary to its insistence on churning out one horrific image after another. It doesn't have the underlying, lingering dread that ghost stories typically should have; there's little time to build tension because there's something grotesque on the screen every other minute. However, that's not to say that Marianne is a write-off. Although this series isn't half as clever as it thinks it is, there's no denying that it's damn entertaining. It's very reminiscent of the Conjuring films in that regard.

As for those images, they are intense and unrelenting. As well as the ghosts and ghouls, and creepy spectral hands slowly reaching around doorways, they managed to track down the single most terrifying old lady ever put to screen. She is pure nightmare fuel.

A frustrating flaw of the series is its poor character writing. None of them, not even the lead, are interesting in the slightest. We're far more focused on the grotesque, ghoulish face that shouted "boo" at us 30 seconds ago than we are about so-and-so who just died.

Despite its flaws, it's definitely well worth watching, even just as mindless, popcorn viewing (it's not quite as clever as it thinks it is). Every now and again, there's nothing wrong with indulging in a series like this; it's like a horror lover's comfort food. Stephen King is even a fan; what more do you need to convince you?

Olivia Bradbury hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
