15 Best Horror TV Series
11. Dead Set
Before Black Mirror, Charlie Brooker wrote the satirical five-part E4 series, Dead Set, which is essentially Dawn of the Dead updated for a shallow, image-obsessed 21st Century audience. The story works on the premise that Britain is being ravaged by a zombie outbreak, and the the only people initially unaware of the carnage are a group of ignorant reality show contestants. As the plague spreads further and begins to affect the show's production staff, the contestants and remaining crew have to hold up in their seemingly secure fortress: the Big Brother House.
Dead Set easily stands alongside the likes of 28 Days Later and Train to Busan as the best of the 'fast zombie' movies (if we're using the word "zombie" loosely). It's cleverly written, funny, painfully relevant and depressingly realistic. If you set the satire to one side, it actually stands as a perfectly solid entry in the zombie genre; in the same way that Shaun of the Dead is a competent example of the films it's parodying.
The zombies are top-notch, particularly the undead Davina McCall (who appears as herself). It also has a brilliantly bleak final few minutes, correcting the one thing that Romero's Dawn got wrong.
It's easily bingeable in an afternoon; give it a go if you haven't had the pleasure already.
