6. The Midnight Gospel

Fans of Adventure Time mastermind/eccentric cartoon creator Pendleton Ward have long known that the writer could take his animated stories into some seriously strange directions despite the show's status as an ostensibly family-friendly series.

In 2020, Netflix proved said fans right with the surreal, fascinating The Midnight Gospel where, unconstrained by the limits of kids TV, Ward's irrepressible imagination goes some strange, funny, and colourful places. Essentially a philosophical podcast accompanied by demented cartoon illustration, the show sees a slacker spacecaster traverse the multiverse in search of answers, or at the very least more, deeper, and odder questions.

It's sweary and gory but also occasionally profound and always interesting, and there's enough philosophical meat for the viewer to chew on in each oddball instalment of this series, as well as some beautifully realized surreal animation.
