The Marvel Cinematic Universe was already making exceptional use of the best elements that science fiction had to offer on the big screen, so in 2012 it took it upon itself to do the same on the small screen. With that, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was born.

Expanding the already-ambitious world explored in the seven films up to that point, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. placed the focus on the hugely-popular Agent Phil Coulson, going so far as to revive the character (or a version of him at least) after the events of The Avengers so that he could lead his own crew of agents as they tackled some of the more unusual events that the ever-changing world of the MCU had to offer.

One of the shows responsible for this modern-day superhero renaissance, it overcame a number of teething errors and declining ratings to develop into perhaps the most consistent superhero show on television. And it feels strange to even call it that, because at its heart, S.H.I.E.L.D. is just an exceptional science fiction show living in a world full of superheroes - and, in being so, it was one of the best offerings of the 2010s.
