15 Best Sci-Fi TV Shows Of The 21st Century

11. Fringe

The X-Files
Fox

Coming from Lost creator JJ Abrams and featuring a premise strangely similar to that of nineties megahit The X-Files, it seemed like Fringe was dead in the water before the Anna Torv/ Joshua Jackson vehicle even debuted in 2009.

So how did this series end up on the “best of the last two decades” list from such inauspicious beginnings?

Well, by exploring alternate universes, diverging timelines, and other trippy sci-fi territory which proved too strange and surreal for the X-Files, meaning what might have been an underwritten rip-off instead turned into a more offbeat investigation of the same fertile territory and resulted in a sci-fi procedural with an identity all of its own which is well worth your time.
