15 Best The Simpsons Songs Ever
4. The Monorail Song
Just pipping Hartmann’s star turn as McClure in Planet Of The Apes is his one-off appearance as monorail shyster Lyle Lanley.
A clear contender for the show’s best ever single episode character, Lanley rolls into town and grifts Springfield into buying an unnecessary and expensive monorail. He’s able to do this because a town with money’s a lot like a mule with a spinning wheel. No one knows how he got it and damned if he knows how to use it.
Despite the fact Marge’s idea to fix Main Street’s pot holes is both sensible and popular, Lanley’s Monorail Song blows it out of the water. It’s a classic not just for the song itself, but because it plays a key part in such an iconic episode.
Its one of the simpler songs on the list, but it’s the simplicity of the piano melody that makes it so catchy. Pulling the likes of Chief Wiggum and Apu to the song only makes it better too, cementing its place in Springfield history.
Marge Vs. The Monorail would be a brilliant episode with or without The Monorail Song, but it’s a huge part of its legacy all the same.
