Homer joining the Stonecutters was a great send-up of the Stonemasons secretly running the world, and came before the lampshading of Scientology in every cult parody on TV. Because of that, it feels more timeless. A couple of lines in the song, particularly the one about Steve Gutenberg being a star, feel a little dated today, but that doesn’t do anything to drag the overall quality down.
Sir Patrick Stewart, voice of Number One in the episode, once said that his work on The Simpsons was one of his favourite TV moments. Not too shabby considering the impressive catalogue of work Stewart has racked up in his decades of work.
The Stonecutters Theme where they joyfully sing about all the things they do epitomises everything that works about the episode. It’s crammed to the rafters with great jokes; not a single line feels wasted or lazy. But more than that, it’s just the right amount of creepy to sell it without going too far and losing the fun involved.
Like all the songs featured here, it’s certainly catchy, but this one has more of a brainwashing catchiness. The perfect tone for the episode.
