15 Best TV Episodes Of 2018 (So Far)
6. Party Monster: Scratching The Surface - Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Although Netflix's decision to split the season meant that Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's fourth season was only six episodes (with more on the way at some unknown date), it was a great way to begin the end of the show (it's already been confirmed that it'll end with the next run of episodes).
That the show is one of the best joke-machines on TV is well-known by now, with each episode firing them out at a rate impossible to catch and equal to that other Tina Fey and Robert Carlock sitcom, 30 Rock. That's once again the case in Party Monster: Scratching The Surface, but it's also an episode that plays with the form of the show, with almost the entirety playing out as a documentary about Reverand Wayne.
Not only does that mean we get a heavy dose of Jon Hamm's performance (a fact alone that makes it a great episode), but a pitch-perfect send-up of the true crime documentary, much like American Vandal before it.
In a single half-hour it sets up and breaks down all of the typical genre tropes in hilarious fashion, while managing to serve as an effective commentary on the justice system (and a hint of #MeToo), and helps push Kimmy's own story forwards as well.
