Appeared in: Season 1, Episode 9 - "Hero" The Scourge were a band of demons brought together for a single purpose: to eliminate the world of "impure" half breeds like vampires and other creatures who were made up of partially human stock. Sound familiar? You can basically think of them as Angel's version of Nazis, and that's exactly what made them so creepy. They also contributed to the death of the first major character to parish on Angel, Angel's side-kick and visionary (literally, he received visions of people who needed Angel's help), Doyle. That was at a point where really only Jenny Calendar had been killed off in the Buffyverse (and the Whedonverse term was yet to exist), and she was never really a major character, just a vulnerable love interest. Overall, the sound of their boots marching like a well-oiled military unit is what stays with us the most, that and the fact that like so many perpetrators of genocidal campaigns in real life, their logic was flawed - per the Buffyverse mythos, all demons who remained on earth after the Old Ones were gone were tainted with human blood, something first mentioned by Anya over on Buffy: "All the demons that walk the Earth are tainted, are human hybrids like vampires." The Scourge, it seems, was just targeting those demons who had more humanity in them than they did.
