15 Greatest American Horror Story Characters
5. Delphine LaLaurie
There are vile, hated characters throughout American Horror Story like Michael and Tate Langdon, Bloody Face, and Dandy Mott, but Delphine LaLaurie is not your average villain. Coming from a different time in history, the New Orleans socialite was ruthless, pompous, egotistical, and racist.
There was not a good bone in her body as she was brought to life by Kathy Bates expertly, creating a hateful antagonist beyond any kind of empathy or redemption. It is no surprise she was brought back for four out of the next six seasons.
There are so many dimensions to LaLaurie's arc throughout Coven, the best of which is her dynamic with Queenie. Despite her intolerable views, Queenie still believes she can help Delphine see the error of her ways, and for a while it feels like she may. Ultimately however, she stays the heinous villain she is.
Incredibly, even with a character such as this, the show is still able to bring a certain aspect of comedy to the table. The majority of this comes from the woman out of time angle. From seeing how the world has changed to thinking an antihistamine is a magic potion, Delphine LaLaurie is a surprisingly well-rounded, albeit repulsive character.
