15 Greatest BoJack Horseman Episodes Of All Time

2. Free Churro (Season 5, Episode 6)

BoJack Horseman The Showstopper
Netflix

A unique episode even by this show's standards, Free Churro is as simple and as effective as they come. Told over the usual twenty-odd minutes, the bulk of the episode takes place at a funeral - that of Beatrice Horseman. There, BoJack gives an episode-long eulogy (he's in the wrong room, but that doesn't effect the speech), allowing him to combat his confusion, anger and sadness over his mother's passing.

Will Arnett has always been the star of the show, but here he proves just how incredible his talents truly are, following BoJack through his complexities. Did BoJack really hate his mother? Did he love her but blame her for the way he turned out? Is there a chance he's truly broken up by her passing? BoJack answers all of these questions at once, to varying degrees of ambiguity, and throughout his monologue contradicts every one of his feelings.

It's a simple, quiet episode, capped-off with a deliciously dark joke and Arnett's best-ever performance. At once, you watch it feeling sad for BoJack, angry at him, sad for Beatrice, hating her, questioning your own conflicting feelings. It's a tough line to walk, but Free Churro does it without fault.
