15 Mind-Blowing Facts You Didn't Know About Red Dwarf
2. The BBC Blew Up Red Dwarf
Strictly speaking, the mining ship Red Dwarf hasn't appeared on TV since 1992. In Demons and Angels Lister accidentally destroyed the science room which cause the engine core to melt and Red Dwarf to explode. This meant the production crew had to destroy the most famous space vessel on TV at the time. Except the original model had been patched up quite heavily over the years and it was easier to build a new one. So they did and blew it up for what would ultimately be less than 30-seconds of footage. Big Red didn't feature in the following series and from series seven onwards she appeared through the magic of CGI, which has come on in leaps and bounds since 1988, but nothing quite beats seeing the original Dwarf ship with all it's glued-on bits and blinking LED lights. Rimmer and Co. would not be seen back on Red Dwarf until series eight aired in 1999.
