7. Tom Blades

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSxN1souf2U Isn't he a footballer for Sheffield United? No. Tom Blades is the guitarist who played THAT memorable throbbing solo during Red Dwarf's opening credits. For series three the boys from the Dwarf were finally given an opening theme song by composer Howard Goodall and so the most iconic sci-fi guitar solo of all-time was born, a title held previously by another BBC show... Blackadder. In 1986, two years before Red Dwarf aired, Goodall had been working on the historic comedy, which Richard Curtis and Ben Elton had been forced to reboot under financial pressure from then-controller Michael Grade. As part of the revamp Goodall hatched a cunning plan, modernise the theme tune in a somewhat Adam Ant-style with an electric guitar solo. Who played that? Yep, Tom Blades. Now he's your new favourite guitarist.
