3. Futurama

The Expanse
20th Television

Following on from his massive success with The Simpsons, Matt Groening created Futurama which ran from 1999 to 2003 on Fox and was later revived from 2008 to 2013 on Comedy Central.

This zany and comical show relied on black humour and some more detailed animations. The wacky misfortunes of a pizza delivery guy who is frozen and woken up in the far future created a great Of course we all remember the characters; Fry, Leela, Bender and all the others, who have become just as iconic as other animated creations.

But a lot of the show's success comes down to how the 140 episodes were put together, which involved both physical and computer-based concepting and design.

While it didn't last nearly nearly as long as its American suburbia brother, Futurama remains a classic for both its clever writing and superb animation which used a combination of techniques to bring its world and characters to life. Hand-drawn two-dimensional art was filled in with digital colour, then rendered in 3D computer animation.

This gave the on-screen action more dimensions, flair and personality when compared to other animated shows at the time. The show may have long passed, but Futurama will still dazzle the eye to anyone who pops an episode on the small screen.
