15 Most Visually Stunning Sci-Fi TV Shows

1. The 100

The Expanse
The CW

Last but not least, we have The 100, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi series that blends the settings of Earth and outer space together. Ninety-seven years after a nuclear apocalypse all but demolished the planet, the remains of humanity lives aboard an orbiting space station known as the Ark.

When carrying capacity is exceeded with the latest generation of births, one hundred juvenile convicts are sent down to the surface to verify its habitability. Instead they stumble upon a renegade pack of humans who survived the nuclear armageddon. A multi-layered conflict erupts between the various factions as the young people desperately try to re-establish contact with their home above the atmosphere.

With a ruined world at its centre, The 100 features a wide variety of effects from the war-torn landscapes through to the scarred make-up work on the various surviving human. Two companies worked on the aforementioned areas; Zoic Studios for CGI work and Mastersfx for practical elements.

Both companies do an excellent job of getting across this bleak vision of Earth, despite working to the often-limited timeframe of two and a half weeks. It's held a consistent version across six seasons so far, with a seventh and final release currently in the works.
