15 Shocking Doctor Who Plot Twists That Nobody Saw Coming

14. A Good Dalek

When it was announced that Doctor Who would be returning to our screens, it was widely regarded that the Daleks wouldn't be too far behind. After all, they were the most iconic - and that's not to mention persistent - adversaries of the Classic Series and it would be going against the basic mythology of the show if each incarnation of the titular Time Lord didn't come across them at one point or another. Famously, though, the pepperpots almost didn't appear in the revived series at all. Formidable licensing issues meant that the BBC were initially struggling to get their greedy mitts on them but, as you'll know, the dispute was eventually settled which meant that the producers were given the green light to dust off the metal monsters and roll them back into the spotlight. Well, one of them, at least. In Series 1's Dalek (as the title suggested), the Ninth Doctor encountered an enemy he thought long since dead but it turns out that one of the Daleks managed to survive the climactic of the Time War, too. It certainly made for an interesting showdown and viewers certainly weren't expecting what happened next. This Dalek was able to travel up stairs (!) and it was also starting to turn good after extracting Rose Tyler's DNA, OK, so that's two things that viewers weren't expecting. The concept of a 'good' Dalek was one that struck a chord with fans but it's significance has somewhat been diminished since owing to the fact that the formidable foes have returned in all their evil glory at every given opportunity. For a brief moment, though, there really was such a thing as a good Dalek in the universe and it's a moment fans will never forget.
