13. Espionage: The Americans

The Handmaids Tale Season 2
FX

Homeland may have had a monopoly on the spy market for a while and although that show kept up a good standard of quality to the end, The Americans' six season arc was bold and precise enough to stand above it right now.

Focusing on Elizabeth and Philip Jennings, American citizens quietly trying to raise their two kids in a suburb. Sounds normal but, Elizabeth and Philip also happen to be Soviet spies during the Cold War and live opposite an FBI agent who becomes increasingly involved in their personal lives.

Starring Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys who have incredible on screen chemistry together (they're married in real life), Elizabeth feels an almost zealot like commitment to Russia while Philip just wants to focus on keeping his family safe. The two bounce off each other incredibly well and their relationship always remains fascinating across the show.

No spy show has since come close to the heightened suspense of the Jennings family struggling to survive in a hostile land that is hunting them.
