Series 10 represented the end-of-an-era for Doctor Who: it was the last series with Steven Moffat in charge, and the final run for Peter Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor too. Luckily they managed to bow out on a high note (Christmas Special pending). The finale itself was excellent, but the setup to that was one of the real highpoints of Capaldi's tenure, rivalling the epic Heaven Sent.

It's a bit of a shame that the big returns of this series - the Mondasian Cybermen and, even bigger, John Simm's Master - were revealed ahead of time, but their respective arrivals in this episode still managed to offer up the sort of spectacle worthy of closing out the season.

Trapped on a giant spaceship, we have the delight of Missy trying to play the hero, but it's not long before the darkness encroaches. The episode has everything you could want from Who, an emotional rollercoaster with plenty of shocks, twists, and tinged with jet black humour, it manages to be, at turns, touching, funny, surprising, creepy, and outright horrifying.

Moffat's script is clever - but not too clever for his own good - and the direction of Rachel Talalay is superb (she has really become one of the series' biggest strengths); perfectly paced and gorgeously shot, with some shocking big moments and delightful smaller ones.
