20 Best Batman TV Episodes Ever

8. 'Harlequinade' (Batman: The Animated Series)

Heart of Ice Batman
Warner Bros. Animation

If you ever wanted an example of just how brilliant a character Harley Quinn really is, then 'Harlequinade' is the episode for you. But that shouldn't come as a surprise considering that you can't beat the original, and this Batman: The Animated Series installment is the perfect reminder of that.

A hilariously self-aware adventure, it sees The Dark Knight forced to rely on The Joker's screwloose henchwoman in order to track down the Clown Prince of Crime whenever he takes Mayor Hill hostage and, as you can imagine, things don't go that well.

Its whimsical tone made for a change from the typical gloomy atmosphere the series was known to impose and yet it never ventured too far into lunacy to become a parody. No, this one was a perfect blend of humour and drama as it strengthened the Harley Quinn character beyond what anyone - namely Batman and The Joker - ever thought she was capable of.

To quote The Joker in the episode's closing moments, she's the greatest.
