After learning about her fate, Eleanor (Kristen Bell) starts to realise everything is not what it seems. Everything she has been shown is not from her life and it becomes evident that a mistake has been made. But that is exactly Michael's plan.
Michael (Ted Danson) is a demon from The Bad Place, posing as an architect for The Good Place. While his role initially is to enact mental torture upon the human group, his character takes a much more wholesome turn. During his experiment, he develops feelings for his subjects and starts to care for them.
Michael is fascinated by the mundane aspects of human life. He takes pleasure in simple tasks such as finding his car keys and using paperclips. Eventually, when Michael decides to leave the afterlife, he manages to organise a deal allowing him to live a regular human life.
