20 Best TV Comedy Characters Of The 21st Century
18. Dwight Schrute - The Office
You can't talk about The Office without talking about Dwight Schrute. Michael's right hand man has been there throughout the entire show and remains a fan favourite. There's a strange sense of innocence around him, due to his constant need to be respected by his workmates. He enjoys martial arts, making regular visits to a local karate gym despite being decades older than it's other students. He also has a passion for law enforcement, as demonstrated by his volunteer sheriff status, even if he believes he is more important than he is.
Dwight has arguably the best character development in the entire show. Having started out as an awkward, disruptive teachers pet, Dwight grew into a long time friend and shoulder to cry on as he progressed. Going from loathing Jim and his pranks, to being close friends with his former enemy was great to watch. The same can be said for his relationship with Angela, even though the relationship's many ups and downs.
Rainn Wilson's character is so well loved and unique, he was very nearly given his own spinoff show 'The Farm'. Sadly, the show didn't make it past the initial pilot. The episode received middling reviews, with critics describing it as more of a forced effort.
