20 Best TV Shows Of 2018
6. Better Call Saul
Better Call Saul has been inching ever closer to Breaking Bad, and that goes for quality as much as it does the universe's timeline. Season 4 did a lot in both regards, with 10 episodes that set the stage for Jimmy McGill to fully transform into Saul Goodman, while providing the sort of character-driven tragedy the show has been excelling at since its debut.
Jimmy has always been a good person at heart, but this season was about the gradual corruption of his soul, which comes in the wake of his brother Chuck's death. There are thrills as he pulls various cons, roping in Breaking Bad favourite Huell and even Kim into his hairbrained schemes, but they're accompanied by agony as the good person he is gets eroded away.
The season wasn't quite as great as Season 3, but only by a touch. It still knows when to switch gears to its more overtly Breaking Bad-esque plot with Mike and Gus, itself bringing its own inherent sadness, but nothing can match the drama of Jimmy and Kim. Their relationship is now at the very core of the show, and is going to be crucial to deciding the heart of Jimmy McGill. It's obviously not going to work out, but Season 4 reminds us that it's going to be incredible to watch happen anyway. Detail-orientated, unafraid to take its time, and with enough story and theme to fit even more than 10 episodes, this remains one of TV's standout continuing dramas.
