20 Best TV Shows Of 2018

5. The Good Place

Just when you think you've figured out The Good Place, it goes right ahead and completely blows up what you think is the premise. That's what got people talking after Season 1, of course, but it's a pattern the show has continued through the back-half of Season 2 and the majority of Season 3.

It's not just its ability to keep on surprising that's noteworthy, but how everytime it does the series never misses a single beat. Whether it's in The Bad Place, back on Earth, or somewhere in between, the show never stops being one of the cleverest and funniest on TV. Part of that comes from Mike Schur and his talented team of writers, directors, effects artists and so on, but a lot comes from the incredible chemistry between the main cast (who remain the best true ensemble on TV), and the fact it's so capable of deftly mixing humour with genuinely affecting and meaningful philosophical and ethical lessons.

There are glorious puns, Bad Janets, multiple Janets, corridors full of surprises, the Brainy Bunch, burritos, Jake Jortles, and Ted Danson just being The Best. It might not have delivered a shock quite on par with that of Season 1, but overall the series became smarter, sillier, and even more fulfilling, and it's going to be so exciting to see where it goes next as a result. Hot diggity dog, holy mother-forking shirtballs, it's The Good Place, and it's the best place on TV for guaranteed laughs.
