20 Best TV Shows Of 2019

1. Chernobyl

HBO

The second mini season in a row (plus Derry Girls and BoJack Horseman having short seasons) prove that 2019 was definitely a year when the best TV shows were short but sweet. After powerhouse performances from Stellan Skarsgaard and Jared Harris, Chernobyl ends as 2019’s best.

Detailing the Ukrainian nuclear reactor explosion and the cover up and investigation in the aftermath, every second of Chernobyl was a tense affair. The long tracking sequence of the shovelers on the roof was especially chilling, as what made the show so great was how brilliantly it zoomed in on the smallest of parts.

A gripping series laced with stellar dialogue, Chernobyl was, in many ways, the apex of television’s abilities. Movies have always been about visual effects and pictures, while television has a great ability to sink its teeth deep into their characters.

The show was not entertaining in a conventional sense, yet every single second was utterly unmissable.
