20 Best TV Shows Of 2019

2. When They See Us

The Boys Homelander Queen Maeve
Netflix

When They See Us only had four episodes, but what a heartbreaking four episodes they were. Detailing the case and the aftermath of the Central Park Five, Ava DuVernay didn’t just tell their story, she explored their pain in deep and abject ways.

Most touching was Part Four, a feature length episode which focussed most specifically on Korey. Not even in the Park that night, Korey only went to the police station out of loyalty to his friend. After being beaten and forced to confess, his life nosedives suddenly.

Part Four tells Korey’s story, but also imagines his life had he not become wrapped up in the case, and makes for a gut wrenching and terrifying sliding doors moment.

It’s certainly not three duds and Part Four though, however good the finale is. The whole show is an excellent examination of the corruption and flaws of the justice system, along with a close attention to the real lives mangled by it.
