After the success of last year's The Suicide Squad, James Gunn was given free reign with a spin-off centred around John Cena's amoral vigilante Peacemaker. The results are eight of the wildest TV episodes of the year so far.

Thanks to John Cena's hilariously self-aware performance and Gunn's extravagant and witty script, Peacemaker is ultra-violent and amusing, but hides under its hilarity a surprisingly profound look into toxic masculinity, vigilantism, and what it really means to be a hero.

In an year where superhero fiction is more pronounced than ever, Peacemaker offers a welcome breath of fresh air, and does so with confidence to spare. It's not high art, but it is ludicrously entertaining, and far more sincere than its off-the-wall characters and dialogue would have you believe.
