20 Best TV Shows Of The Last Decade

10. Hannibal

The Leftovers
NBC

Taking Thomas Harris’s Hannibal Lecter series, and turning it into a procedure show for NBC sounded like a sure-fire recipe for disaster. Luckily it was overseen by unique showrunner Bryan Fuller.

Fuller's match with the material resulted in a suitably macabre and gorgeously stunning journey that stands as his most successful TV run to date.

Proceedings started in a bizarre procedure structure before morphing into a deliciously dark relationship drama charting Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen) and his bipolar friendship with Will Graham (Hugh Dancy). It was a backwards love story, cemented by two compelling lead performances.

Mikkelsen took on a role, that had been forever overshadowed by Anthony Hopkins’ iconic portrayal. Yet, he managed to completely make it his own, with an emotionless shark-like gaze and spry physical agility giving the character a fresh and individual nature.

Fuller was able to re-invent the familiar source material as well, delving into iconic scenes and storylines whilst still taking his own surprising routes, with the final season adapting the Red Dragon arc, arguably the best version of it, to date.
