20 Best TV Shows Of The Last Decade
12. Mr Robot
This distinct show emerged from (out of all places) the USA Network in 2015. The first season floored everyone, transforming showrunner Sam Esmail, from a barely registering indie director to one of this generation's most visually arresting storytellers, and movie bit-player Rami Malek, into one of our most interesting current lead actors.
Despite the flashy stylish flourishes and arresting techno-thriller set-pieces, the core appeal lies within the involving tale of Malek’s introverted hacker dealing with the emotional fallout of his rocky past. The intimacy the audience develops with the protagonist is unlike any other show in recent memory.
Malek is brilliant, but so is his counter-part played by Christian Slater, in a much-deserved comeback role. The character is both snarling antagonist, and warm mentor figure...sometimes both at once.
It's been a demanding and exhilarating ride throughout and one truly like any other, with visual panache, mind-bending twists but also grounded by a satisfying human story at its centre.
