20 Doctor Who Facts That Will Blow Your Mind

4. There Has Already Been A Female Doctor

Ezgif 1778499487 Gif So stop going on about it, OK!? The continuing campaigns for the show to enlist it's first female Doctor haven't just been around since the show's 21st century revival. Its very own creator, Sydney Newman, once wrote a very angry letter to the BBC calling for the Time Lord to have a long overdue sex change during the show's ratings crisis in the 80s. His wish came true (well... sort of!) in 1999 and, while it isn't officially canon, it's still not entirely true when people claim that there's never been a female Doctor, either. Because guess what? There has! Joanna Lumley took her turn as TV's favourite Time Lord for a critically and fan lauded Comic Relief sketch, The Curse of the Fatal Death, written by none other than Steven Moffat, and she was jolly well good at it, too. Inspired, darling! It's definitely worth checking out if you haven't done so already.
