20 Most Important TV Deaths This Decade

20. David Palmer - 24 (Season 5, Episode 1)

David Palmer was, aside from protagonist Jack Bauer, arguably the most likeable and admirable character in the entire history of 24 so far, given his sympathetic status as a Presidential candidate being targeted for assassination, and his later appeal as an absurdly idealistic President. Despite surviving an attempt on his life at the end of season two, the loveable former POTUS met his end in the season five premiere, being sniped while staring out of a window and talking to his brother, Wayne. His death had major implications on future storylines for a number of seasons, and ever since he bit the bullet, we've missed his velvety voice and immense composure compared to the hotheaded Bauer. Palmer is a culturally iconic character to the extent that many commentators believe his portrayal of a black President may have helped Barack Obama become elected, while actor Dennis Haysbert expressed disappointment that the character was killed off.
