When Star Trek: Enterprise – back then just Enterprise – was in preproduction, veteran Star Trek concept designer John Eaves (Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection) took on the mammoth task of designing the prototypical starship Enterprise.

Eaves' early take on the Enterprise (later dubbed the NX-01) ran the gamut of totally unrecognizable to configurations that hewed closer to the original 1960s ship, like above.

While these designs ultimately went unused in favor of work done by illustrator Doug Drexler, Eaves' early NX-01 designs clearly informed his revision of the 1701 for Star Trek: Discovery's "Will You Take My Hand?" almost twenty years later.
