20 Mind-Blowing Facts You Never Knew About Sherlock

18. Sherlock Forgets Lestrade's First Name In A Nod To The Books

Throughout the three series, Sherlock has proven time and again he is incapable of remembering Inspector Lestrade's first name. Clearly it isn't deemed important enough to deserve a place in his mind palace. Far from just another character tic, this is actually a sly wink back to the Arthur Conan Doyle's source. In the books we never learn Lestrade's first name, knowing only that it begins with a G. So naturally Sherlock would be confused. The TV version's actual name is Greg, itself a reference to Detective Gregson, Lestrade's rival in the books. There's lots of very particular references like this in the show that would require Sherlock-level deduction to spot. Which really says a lot of both the level of fan interest and how much the writers know the source.
