5. Xander Could Have Been Gay

One of the most famous developments of the series is Willow's realisation that she is gay that comes in Season Four of the show. The move has been seen as extremely important as Willow and her partner Tara became one of the first lesbian couples on US television. Though this might appear to be a masterplan of Joss Whedon's (Willow's gayness is even alluded to in earlier episodes) but at one point the idea was for Xander to be the one of Buffy's sidekicks revealed to be gay. Whedon has said that it was always his idea for one of the core characters to be gay but he at first wasn't sure who. Xander turning out to be gay would have been a very interesting alternative turn of events, particularly as the show is peculiarly lacking in male gay characters. But then if Xander was gay the show would have been lacking in female gay characters. Maybe it would have been best if both had been gay?
