The shock end of Hannibal's first season saw Will Graham taken into custody by Crawford for the probable murder of Abigail Hobbs, whose severed ear is found in his sink (amongst other bits of evidence planted by the devious Dr Lecter). It's a great twist and upsets absolutely everyone involved, as did Abigail's sudden and violent death.

Early on in the writing process, however, Kacey Rohl's was supposed to survive in the place of somebody else having a nasty demise (leading to Will throwing up somebody else's ear and getting carted off to a jail cell). According to actress Hettienne Park, it was her crime scene investigator Beverly Katz who was supposed to kick the bucket.

Of course, she ended up falling prey to Hannibal in the second season episode “Mukōzuke”, but that dodge bought her some time. Beverly dead and Abigail alive, even for a short period, would have made a major change to the overarching plot, although neither Park nor Bryan Fuller has explained what caused the decision.
