5. The Dark Tower
The plans for The Dark Tower are similar to those for The Kingkiller Chronicles, only way more advanced (at least in terms of the movie).
The film, which feels like it's been a lifetime in coming to the screen, will star Idris Elba as the Gunslinger Roland Deschain, who journeys to find the Dark Tower, which could hold the key to saving his world from extinction, and Matthew McConaughey as Walter Padick, aka the Man in Black, a sorcerer hot on his trail.
Rather than a direct adaptation, it's said to serve more as a sequel to Stephen King's books, and then the TV series will fill out some of the backstory, more straightforwardly adapting King's The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass, which plays out more as a prequel despite being the fourth in the series. Elba is set to reprise his role, and the Man in Black will return in some form, though it's unknown whether McConaughey will be back.
Production is expected to start later this year, despite the fact no network has picked it up yet (but it'll have to be somewhere like Netflix, Amazon, or HBO, for both budgetary and thematic reasons).
